Determines the number of liquids that can be controlled. 4-channel ValveLink systems actually come with a ValveLink8.2 controller (we don’t make a ValveLink4), so they can easily be expanded later by adding more valves. 16-channel systems come with two controllers connected electronically to act as one unit. We can daisy-chain a perfusion system with up to 80 channels. Please contact us.

ValveLinks are less expensive than AutoMate Scientific’s ValveBank controllers and include manual pushbuttons, digital/TTL, analog and USB inputs to control valves. They are designed for easy control by your data acquisition software. ValveBanks include manual control, digital inputs, plus they can be programmed through their keypad and LCD screen or EasyCode® software from a Macintosh or PC-Windows. ValveBanks run user valve sequence ‘programs’ without a computer, and include eight programmable digital outputs for control of external devices. Entire ValveBank programs can also be triggered by a single TTL pulse.

See a comparison of ValveLink and ValveBank controllers.

Pinch valves – 1/32″ i.d. silicon tube passes through, and is pinched closed by the valve. No liquid comes into contact with the valve. Easiest valves to clean and switch tubing; however, switching times are increased to 10-20ms. Less expensive.

PTFE-inert valves – Excellent chemical and corrosion resistance. Non-stick surface resists particle and chemical deposits. Open and close in approximately 8-10 ms. More expensive.

SmartSquirt® – Pneumatic valves use air pressure to push precious solutions from small cryo tube reservoirs located near the prep.

    More about SmartSquirt

Priced per set of four valves. An extra grounding wire attached to all valves extending back to the controller. This item is required for CE conformity in Europe, and highly recommended for all electrophysiology.

It must be ordered when purchasing the valves – it cannot be added later.

    For anyone who needs:

    • Faster Switching
    • Steady flow-rate
    • Small diameter pipette delivery
    • Microliter fine delivery
    • Microinjecting

Pressurization will help give more consistent flow rates with any perfusion system. It will also help overcome many problems associated with bubbles in the tubing, although this should really be accomplished by warming your solutions above room temperature (to outgas them) BEFORE your experiments. AutoMate Scientific’s pressure upgrade was primarily designed for use with the PerfusionPencil – our multi-barrel manifold tip. It is difficult to obtain liquid flow through our 250 µm tip with just gravity, and impossible through the 100 µm tip (see chart below). Several psi of air pressure results in ideal flow rates and very fast switching times through the PerfusionPencil.

    • Can be added to any new or existing perfusion rig – from AutoMate Scientific, any 3rd party manufacturer, even homemade!
    • Connect to house air, or compressor (30 to 100 psi).
    • Precision regulator delivers zero to 10 psi.
    • Available with four, eight or sixteen channels.
    • Syringe reservoirs may also be placed in a water bath.
    • Sturdy stainless steel construction.
    • Includes 5 micro bowl filter and gauge.
    • Elegant design allows individual air control and easy refilling.

Our valve controllers use DB-9, DB-15, and DB-25 connectors respectively for their digital inputs (similar connectors to serial ports on computers). Some data acquisition hardware (i.e. DigiData, ITC-16, etc.) or computer interface hardware (i.e. National Instruments) use BNC connectors for their digital outputs. Others offer custom digital ports. AutoMate offers a variety of special cables pre-made to connect the valve controllers to digital outputs. Or, if you plan on controlling valves from your computer, you can make such a cable yourself.

Program your valve and TTL on-off sequences with a Macintosh or PC-Windows compatible computer using graphic ‘click-and-drag’ timebars. Save and load unlimited programs to disk, print out program listings, then download your programs into the ValveBank’s memory in one simple step.

Perfuse cells right in your Petri Dish. Cells cultured in Petri dishes are a popular research tool used in numerous applications, including patch clamping and intracellular ion probe imaging. True perfusion (continuous inflow and outflow) of solutions can be difficult to configure. This forces scientists to plate cells on cover slips for placement into specially designed perfusion chambers. However, such transfer is a time consuming process which introduces the potential for contamination plus additional expense.

The PCP-1 chamber was designed by scientists after years of patch clamp research to overcome this problem. Perfuse cells right in your Petri dish with any perfusion system and an optional PTFE-Inert manifold (sold separately). Ideal for inverted microscopy using optically clear Petri dishes. Adjustable metal suction tube included. Dimensions: 35mm, outside diameter x 20mm tall.
